Be happy, not gay

Story 1
Story 2

The ACLU recently announced it would take the side of a Naperville student that was banned from wearing a t-shirt that reads "Be happy, not gay".

This is one of those maddening cases where you have to cut the ACLU slack. They are about first amendment rights. This is a case about exactly that, and they are coming down on the side of free speech, just like always. Remember, free speech is not necessarily stuff you want to hear. Anyway, I am not really interested in the ACLU angle anyways. As long as they stay consistent, I support their defense of first amendment rights even when I might not like those who they defend.

My issue is the content of the shirt. What if the shirt said "Be happy, not a christian bigot" or "...christian homophone" or just "...christian"? Yeah, I am completely sure that those crowing about the banning of the anti-gay shirt would stand up the same way for one of those shirts. Hey, its free speech kids and it can get ugly! But if you allow the one, you HAVE to allow the other. Which brings me to my final point.

Where is the problem here? I think that both of the shirts (real and proposed) contain disruptive messages probably not conducive to a good learning environment. So how about we just disallow them both. Students rights are abridged at school already. They are minors.
